Christopher De La Cruz

Director of Christian Formation

As the Director of Christian Formation, Chris oversees the education and discipleship ministries at MAPC. This includes adult education and Bible studies, children and family ministries, and especially youth ministries, all which strive to equip and inspire our church in being formed for following Christ.

Chris came to MAPC in 2013 to lead the church in starting up middle and high school ministries from scratch. Under his oversight and with the service of many faithful members, MAPC started up youth groups serving the poor, Bible study and fellowship groups, Youth Worship, a youth leadership ministry in assisting with our Wednesday Kids’ Club program, a rejuvenated Youth Sunday, Pizza & Game Nights, and a youth mission partnership with Iowa churches, where urban New Yorkers and rural Iowans serve together as the body of Christ. Chris also oversaw the transformation of a conference room into a Youth Lounge, equipped with couches, beanbags and chalkboard painted walls that create a sense of belonging for our young people.

Chris is the son of Filipino immigrants and a New Jersey native. A fierce atheist for much of his adolescence, he came back to faith during his time at Rutgers University. Chris worked for a number of years at The Star-Ledger newspaper in New Jersey, as a reporter and then a web editor. During this time, while serving as a lay leader for the high school and outreach ministries at Park Church, a church plant in Red Bank, NJ, the call to church leadership became too strong for him to ignore.

Chris graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree, and is currently under the ordination process to become a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He has also served in ministry leadership at Kingston United Methodist Church and Rutgers Episcopal Campus Ministry, both in New Jersey.
Chris now lives in the Church House with his wife, Amanda, his daughter, Amelia, and his son Jasper. Chris can’t shake off the news junkie in him; he may or may not be sneaking in news blogs throughout the day. His favorite band is R.E.M., but he loves all things modern music, including Arcade Fire, Beyonce, Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens, Kendrick Lamar, and Taylor Swift. He also loves all things food, especially mushrooms.
